You'll notice in this Skrewball whiskey recipe that some elements of the old fashioned are traditional while others are unique.

  • Bourbon: Bourbon is a type of U.S. whiskey made mainly from corn. If you're interesting in learning more about bourbon and other types of whiskey, check out my whiskey 101 post. For this recipe, you're welcome to use your favorite brand of Bourbon.
  • Peanut butter whiskey: There are many brands of peanut butter whiskey available including Bird Dog, Sqrrl, Skatter Brain, Honest Truth, and more. However, my personal favorite is Skrewball.
  • Cinnamon simple syrup: Rather than using a sugar cube like is traditional in most old fashioned recipes, I've opted for cinnamon simple syrup. I think it pairs nicely with the peanut butter whiskey, and it adds a perfect touch of spice. If you're interested in making a homemade version of this simple syrup, check out the recipe notes below.
  • Aromatic bitters: We're keeping this traditional element in order to balance out the flavor of the co*cktail.
  • Orange peel: Don't forget to express and garnish with an orange peel. It really helps finish off the drink in an elegant way.

How To Make This Recipe

Part of the reason I love this peanut butter whiskey old fashioned is the simplicity of the drink. Here's how to make this co*cktail:

1. Add a large ice cube to a lowball glass. Pour bourbon, peanut butter whiskey, and cinnamon simple syrup into the glass.

2. Add in two dashes of aromatic bitters. You can think of bitters like salt for your co*cktail. They help round out the flavors and give balance to the drink.

3. Using a bar spoon, stir the co*cktail together.

4. Finally, express the oil of an orange peel over the glass. To do this, use a vegetable peeler to slice off a long peel of the orange.

Hold the peel over the glass and twist it to release the oil in the peel. This is a great technique that bartenders use to add additional flavor.

Drop the peel in for an easy co*cktail garnish. Then, serve up this delicious Skrewball on the rocks drink.

Expert Tips

  • Ever wondered why you stir an old fashioned instead of shake it? co*cktails composed fully of spirits should generally be stirred to minimize the amount of dilution. You want the liquor to be the pronounced flavor in the co*cktail, rather than having it diluted from ice.
  • Make sure to use a large ice cube in this Skrewball old fashioned. This prevents too much water from diluting the drink.
  • Feel free to adjust the sweetness of the co*cktail by adding more or less simple syrup depending on your preference.

Recipe FAQs

Can I adjust the sweetness of the old fashioned?

Of course! Feel free to add more or less cinnamon simple syrup according to your personal taste preference.

I don't have access to large ice cubes. Can I just use what I have in my freezer?

A large ice cube is nice because it doesn't melt as quickly, giving you more of the pure flavor of the co*cktail. This is popular in many alcohol-forward co*cktails. You can purchase large ice cube trays for a reasonable price.

However, in a pinch, you're welcome to use regular freezer ice. Keep in mind that it will dilute the drink quicker than a large ice cube.

What does expressing an orange peel mean?

This is a fancy term that means to squeeze an orange peel over your co*cktail. To do this technique, use a vegetable peeler to slice off a long piece of the orange peel. Hold the peel over the glass then bend the peel to release as much oil as possible. Make sure not to break the peel in half so you can use it as a garnish.

This bartender technique gives you a unique drinking experience. You will be able to smell the orange as you bring the glass close to your nose as well as get a punch of flavor when you sip.

Can you use simple syrup instead of a sugar cube in an old fashioned?

Yes, you can absolutely use simple syrup instead of a sugar cube. I prefer to use simple syrup because the sugar has already been dissolved, leaving fewer concerns about having a gritty texture in the old fashioned.
