Does Sudoku go diagonal as well? ›

Does sudoku go diagonal? The short answer is: no. In regular sudoku there are no diagonal rules that state the two 9 cell diagonals must contain all the numbers 1 through 9. There is however a variant of sudoku that does add this rule as an additional constraint: diagonal sudoku (also known as X sudoku).

The objective of Sudoku is to fill each row, column and sub-grid with exactly one of the possible entries (usually, the numbers 1-9). A conflict arises if you repeat any entry in the same row, column or sub-grid.

The easiest way starting a Sudoku puzzle is to scan rows and columns within each triple-box area, eliminating numbers or squares and finding situations where only a single number can fit into a single square. The scanning technique is fast and usually sufficient to solve easy puzzles all the way to the end.

Find Easy Opportunities First

Initially, every sudoku grid has a few rows and columns filled with the correct numbers. This provides good hints and a reliable starting point for new players when learning how to play. Check for grids with many positioned numbers, and start from there.

The short answer is no.

Any proper Sudoku puzzle should only have one unique solution that can be found through logical deduction without the need for guessing. That said, Sudokus can have multiple solutions or only one unique solution based on the initial starting clues and their positions in the grid.

How to do diagonal Sudoku? ›

The numbers 1–9 must appear exactly once in the diagonals from each corner. The 2 main diagonals are 9 squares long. One runs from the top left to the bottom right corners, and the other goes from the top right to the bottom left corners. No other diagonal in the puzzle follows these constraints.

The goal is to fill in each of the cells with a number from one through nine. The digits must be placed so that each appears only once per row, column and box. It sounds simple written out like this, but some of these puzzles can be quite twisted.

The diagonal pattern can be found with only two numbers in a box. This pattern can help locate twins. If twins are found it can help find other numbers. There can be more than two numbers in a box that has the diagonal pattern but only two numbers are needed for the diagonal pattern to exist.

This is more pleasing to the human eye as compared to an unsymmetrical pattern. Almost all quality Sudoku puzzles (like those in Puzzazz) are symmetric and many editors will not accept Sudoku puzzles which are not symmetric. Most puzzles have diagonal symmetry, but some have left-right symmetry.
